Graduate Student Jason Dean in Professor James Liao’s group engineered a synthetic metabolic pathway into mice, allowing the animals to resist diet-induced obesity. The work was published in Cell Metabolism June 3, 2009, and featured in Technology Review, Science Daily, and UCLA news release.

Professor Yoram Cohen was elected to the highest grade of American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) membership, AIChE Fellow.

Professor Vasilios Manousiouthakis has been awarded $2.1 million in grant funding to build a state-of-the-art hydrogen fueling station on the UCLA campus. The station will also be used by UCLA Engineering students as a learning and research facility. UCLA news release.

The inaugural Friedlander Lecture was held on May 15, 2009. The lecture was given by John Seinfeld, Louis E. Nohl Professor of Chemical Engineering at the the California Institute of Technology.
